Here Bex shares with us some insights into what drives her & training at home.
🐴Training at Home
Every equestrian is working towards the same results, for your horse to be responsive, supple and willing to do the job. Flat work and schooling are essential and I use a lot of pole exercises as well. All my horses practice schooling over angles from a young age so as the fences get bigger they are comfortable to hold their line and that obviously helps in jump offs. Also keep it varied, I do a lot of hacking up the hills near me to keep the horses happy and fit.
🐴Tips and advice
You must believe in yourself and your horse. If you can visualise yourself riding every stride, landing every fence and moving between the fences, then you can. Preparation is also key, practice at home so you can readily adapt almost automatically when you have to. Re-watch your mistakes but don’t dwell on them, learn from them. Watch your good rounds repeatably and remember how it feels when things go right. Trust your gut feelings and don’t be influenced by others too much. Everyone has advice and they also have opinions, take from it what works for you.
🐴Highs and lows
I have had a phenomenal few seasons, including jumping at the World Breeding Championships at Zangersheide. My long term goal is to become an established International Rider, producing the horses along the way. Everyone has some lows, that is horses and there are also the obvious mistakes that we have all made such as; taking the wrong course (despite jumping it 3 times before), jumping a fence or two backwards, starting before the buzzer....
I just love to compete, whether it is a big or small show - that is the thrill I live for! Ultimately I just want to be happy and successful, surrounded by wonderful horses and people.
